K'nex Forces, Energy & Motion
New set
The
K'NEX Forces, Energy & Motion Racer Set offers an exciting, versatile,
hands-on investigative opportunity for students. The curriculum is organized
as a series of objectives achieved through classroom discussion and
laboratory exercises. Teachers using balsa wood, CO2
and mousetrap powered vehicles will appreciate the versatility and benefits
of using flexible, dependable, reusable, and easy to manipulate K'NEX.
Students
investigate potential and kinetic energy, and identify the differences
between energy associated with position and condition. Using rubber
band and spring motor powered vehicles, students experiment with and
investigate the effects of changing variables. The options and variations
for vehicle design and testing are limitless, and each alteration is
easily duplicated to ensure valid, consistent, reliable results.
Throughout
their study of forces, energy and motion, students cultivate concrete
experiences that will form the foundation for scientific practices for
future laboratory study. Students follow sound experimental procedures
in data collection and have the opportunity to evaluate techniques used
to complete experiments.
While
working on each lesson's objectives, students consider: methods for
data collection and graphing; condition of experimental tools; validity
and reliability of experiments through multiple trials; setting investigation
standards; margin for experimental error, etc. Focusing on these concepts
at these grade levels insures students are prepared for future in-depth
experimentation.
Communication
is an important goal in any science classroom. The Forces, Energy &
Motion Educator Guide provides suggestions that encourage students to
present and communicate their ideas and findings in a variety of formats
(posters, drawings, formal lab reports, discussions, etc.).
