Multi-Grade Rocket Lesson Ideas for All Ages

One of the greatest things about model rockets is their versatility. There are so many different designs to choose from and several levels to work on. Model rockets attract a vast number of people across all demographics, and they can demonstrate many lessons. Take a look at these multi-grade rocket lesson ideas for all ages.

Motion and Flight

The beginning stages of any model rocket construction start with motion and flight. Students and hobbyists know that the goal is putting their model rocket in motion. Your students will learn how to identify and trace the basic path of a rocket from launch to recovery.

This is where physics come into play. They’ll learn about Newton’s Third Law of Motion relating to launching a model rocket. For every action (force) in nature, there is an equal and opposite reaction. Something propels the rocket forward, and students will learn how much power or force is necessary for the action to launch the rocket.

Rocket Stability

Stability is an important consideration when working on model rockets. The rocket must stabilize when in motion to keep its momentum. Students and hobbyists will learn about the elements required to accomplish this goal.

When the rocket is airborne, the air has more surface area to push behind the balance point than in front. The fins provide a greater surface area, and students will learn the functions of the fins and how they stabilize the rocket as it sails through the air.

Height Capability

The flight height capabilities for a model rocket rely on the shock cords. Continue to assemble the rocket and add shock cords and shock cord mounts to the model. Students will learn how the shock cord absorbs the shock from the ejection charge.

Choose the shock cord based on the size of the rocket and the type of model rocket engine. A 1/8” diameter heavy-duty elastic shock cord works well for mid-power-sized rockets that use an E, F, or G-size engine.

Safety and Security

Everyone will learn about safety and security. Model rockets come with a lot of precautions. Before a launch, students must consider outside forces that could affect the success of the launch.

A successful launch doesn’t mean a rocket reaches its highest peak. It must also have a safe recovery, and no one can get injured in the process. Ask students to pay close attention to the atmosphere. The weather and location play a big role in a launch, so teach this lesson sooner rather than later.

At AC Supply, we love how multi-grade model rocket lessons can appeal to all ages because we aim to supply fun for everyone! For more information, visit our website.
